Displaying the flag
When should the flag be displayed?
From sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs. It may be displayed 24 hours a day if it is properly illuminated during darkness. We sell and install flagpole lighting for exactly that.
How do I display the flag on a wall?
Whether vertical or horizontal, the union (the blue field of stars) should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, which is the observer's left.
How do I fly it with other flags on the same staff?
The U.S. flag is always at the peak, above state, city, organizational or company flags on the same pole.
How do I display it in a group of flags on separate poles?
At the center and highest point of the group, or to the flag's own right, which is the furthest left for the observer. State flags follow in order of admission to the Union, then other flags.
Can I fly the flag in bad weather?
The Flag Code says not to, unless it is an all-weather flag. All of our outdoor flags are all-weather nylon or heavy weight polyester. Even so, taking the flag in during a severe storm or a named hurricane will greatly extend its life and protect the pole.
Handling and respect
What is the correct way to raise and lower the flag?
Hoist briskly, lower ceremoniously. It should never touch the ground or anything beneath it.
What size flag for my pole?
Roughly one quarter of the pole height: a 3×5 on a 20-foot pole, 4×6 on 25 feet, 5×8 on 30 to 35 feet. See residential flagpoles.
Half-staff
How do I fly the flag at half-staff?
Hoist it briskly to the peak for an instant, then lower it ceremoniously to the half-staff position. When lowering for the day, raise it to the peak again for an instant before lowering it completely.
When is the flag flown at half-staff?
To mark a period of national or state mourning, by presidential or gubernatorial order. Regular occasions include Memorial Day (until noon), Patriot Day (September 11), Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (December 7) and the death of principal government figures. Veterans Day is full staff.
Retiring the flag
What do I do with a flag that is old, worn or damaged?
When a flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning, at a ceremony run by an organization such as the American Legion, VFW or Scouts. For our customers, we are happy to help: bring worn flags to the shop and we will see them retired. See flag retirement.
